Answer

How Do Churches Find Local Community Services?

Dennis Ellis · September 15, 2026

Most churches use a printed agency list, a shared spreadsheet, or the memory of one long-serving volunteer. A maintained directory replaces all three with a searchable list of local providers that records hours, eligibility and contact details, and that someone is responsible for keeping current.

The three tools churches actually use

Ask a church office how they find a food pantry for someone and you will hear one of three answers.

A printed list. Usually assembled by a previous staff member, usually two to five years old. It is the fastest to use and the most likely to be wrong.

A spreadsheet. Better, because it can be edited. Worse in one specific way: only the person who maintains it knows which rows they still trust.

A person. The volunteer who has done this for eleven years and knows who answers the phone. This is the best of the three by a wide margin, and it is the one that leaves.

Why all three fail the same way

None of them can tell you that something changed.

A grant ends and a program closes. A pantry moves to Tuesdays only. An agency stops serving your county. In every case the entry on the list looks exactly the way it looked when it worked. Nothing in a piece of paper, a spreadsheet cell, or a memory raises a hand.

The church finds out when someone drives across town and comes back.

What a maintained directory does differently

It puts four things in one place, per provider:

Then it adds the thing a list cannot: someone whose job is to keep it current, and a way for your own staff to correct it when they learn something the list does not know.

CMinLink ships a curated provider catalog for your area rather than handing you an empty database. Staff search it by category, by full text, or by location, and can add and edit providers on top of the catalog.

Two features exist specifically because of the drive-across-town problem: the directory computes whether a provider is open right now, and it measures real travel distance from your church’s address rather than a straight-line guess.

Common questions

Can we start from a list we already have?
Yes. An existing spreadsheet or printed list can be imported in bulk rather than retyped one provider at a time.
Who keeps it up to date?
In CMinLink, a curated catalog is maintained for your area and your staff edit on top of it. Changes your church makes stay yours.
What if a provider we use is not in it?
Add it. Staff with the right permission can create and edit organizations and the service categories they belong to.
